Lady Coalers look to rebound after sputtering for starters

    The Coal City varsity volleyball team has had a rough start, dropping their second game of the season on Thursday to Morris.
    The Lady Coaler fought hard throughout the match, but wound up losing in three games. They won the second game, 26-24, but lost the first and third, 25-22, 25-21, respectively.
    Katelyn Sisk earned seven kills on 20 attempts, and had one service ace, while Blaire Harseim added three kills with two aces.
    Megan Norris and MaKenna Crater both chipped in with one kill a piece.

Lady Wildcats win over Gardner-South Wilmington

    The Wilmington volleyball team was unable to come away with a win on Monday, suffering a loss to Ottawa Marquette in two games.
    The Lady Wildcats varsity managed 16 points in both of their games as they lost to Ottawa, 25-16, 25-16.
    Allie Homerding finished with a team-high of nine digs on the defense, while Abby Chamberlin secured six digs, eight assists and six kills.
    The junior varsity team also lost to Ottawa, but did win one of the games, 25-11.
    The opposition picked up wins in the second and third games, 28-26, 25-17.

Lady Coalers will be young but scrappy

    The Coal City varsity volleyball team will be looking like a different team than a year ago.
    While the Lady Coalers will still be looking to remain competitive throughout the year, they will be doing it with a slightly younger team.
    “We are a very young team this season,” said three-year coach Pam McMurtrey. “We only have four returning seniors.”
    Coal City had a stellar season last year, despite losing in the Regional to Providence, as they finished the season with an overall record of 24-12.

Wakefield welcomes return of veteran players

    Expectations are high for the Wilmington varsity volleyball team as they prepare for the 2017 season which opens Tuesday.
    The Lady Wildcats are coming off an 11-20 season in 2016, where they fell in the second round of Regional to Beecher. However, with plenty of returning veterans, along with a handful of new-comers, the volleyball team has it sights on loftier goals.

Lady Comet netters ready to build on their successes

Reed-Custer’s varsity volleyball coach Kelly Van Duyne would make a good mason. For the past two years a solid foundation has been laid for her players and  her goal is to elevate it with the start of a new season Tuesday.
    The Lady Comets went from being a program with a series of defeats covering the past five years (winning less than 10 games altogether), to becoming a winning program with a Regional title.
    Van Duyne enters her third year with the team, and will be looking for continued success this year, as expectations remain high.

    The Reed-Custer volleyball program enjoyed a little fun this past week, as they held their middle school and high school volleyball camps.
    The week serves as a well-deserved break from all the hard work the athletes put in, including weight training, off-season practices and workouts.
