Coalition looks to target tobacco use

The members of the Braidwood Area Healthy Community Coalition (BAHCC) are working to get out the word on dangers associated with tobacco use, especially in the era of electronic cigarettes.

During this month’s regular meeting of the BAHCC, members discussed to current bills making their way through the state legislature in Springfield.

BAHCC kicks off plans for grant dollars

The Braidwood Area Healthy Community Coalition (BAHCC) has grown in size and scope over the past several years. Now, thanks to federal grant dollars, the coalition has been able to add to its professional staff, hiring a new project coordinator for its Drug Free Communities (DFC) grant projects.

Earlier this month, the BAHCC announced that Shree Woods has been named to the new position.

Woods formerly worked with the BAHCC as a representative from the Will County Health Department.

Fighting drug abuse, there’s still work to do

Braidwood has made strong efforts over the past several years battling the opioid epidemic, cracking down on dealers and working to connect addicts with services.

Still, Braidwood’s fire chief said there’s still a problem, and it’s one that emergency services and local partners are working to fix.

Braidwood Fire Protection District Chief Barry Eggers said that the most recent report from the station shows that for every 100 ambulance calls, five are to respond to an overdose or possible overdose.

Coalition set to bring new therapy for new year

Two months after being named a recipient of some important grant dollars, the Braidwood Area Healthy Community Coalition (BAHCC) is firming up plans to bring a unique form of therapy to children and adults in the area.

In September, the BAHCC was awarded $10,000 from the Community Foundation of Will County (CFWC). The plan – to use the cash to pay for innovative art therapy.

Coalition assists BPD in drug takeback

The Braidwood Area Healthy Community Coaltion (BAHCC) stepped up efforts to battle drug issues over the weekend, participating in an event to help pull prescription drugs away from the grasp of potential misuse.

The Braidwood Police Department and the BAHCC participated in the national Drug Takeback event hosted by the DEA on Saturday, Oct. 27, where residents were encouraged to bring in their expired, unused, or unwanted medications.

Will County earns cash for drug prevention

The Will County Sheriff’s Office has an additional resource for its drug prevention efforts.

On Oct. 11, sheriff’s office social worker Bonnie McPhillips made a presentation in front of the Will County Board Executive Committee, announcing that the department-supported coalition, the Will County Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition, is the recipient of a $125,000 federal Drug-Free Communities (DFC) Grant.

Grant funds will bring art therapy to area

Coalition secures federal funding

The Braidwood Area Healthy Community Coalition (BAHCC) will get a huge boost for combating substance use and abuse in the area.

In late August, the coalition was awarded federal grant funding from the Drug Free Communities (DFC) Support Program.

The award means the BAHCC will receive a total of $125,000 per year for the next two years, with the possibility of extending the receipt of those funds for up to 10 years.

BAHCC receives grant for drug disposal solution

Braidwood’s organization that works to fight the drug epidemic has a new tool in its toolbox to fight substance abuse.

The Braidwood Area Health Communities Coalition (BAHCC) has been awarded a grant from the Amerisource Bergen Foundation to assist with the coalition’s mission to fight illegal drug use and abuse.

The initiative helps provide communities with safe solutions to dispose of opioids and other drugs, via deactivation bags to make medicine safe to discard.

City recognizes Alcohol Awareness Month

City leaders in Braidwood have committed to spending the month of April recognizing the negative effects that alcohol can have on community youth.

On March 13, members of the City Council signed off on a resolution declaring April as Alcohol Awareness Month.

“This is through our coalition as well, and our partnership with them, and the CHANGE program,” Mayor Jim Vehrs said.

The resolution was authored with help and statistics from the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence.
