Wilmington Dist. 209 gets back in the swing of things

It’s been anything but a typical start to the school year.

But, despite the COVID-19 pandemic that has put administrators on alert and created a need for daily symptom checks and mask wearing, things are looking somewhat ordinary at Wilmington School District 209-U.

Currently, there are 1,205 students enrolled in the district.

At Bruning Elementary, enrollment is 202 students, with 161 in person and 41 remote learners. That’s down from 307 students in 2019-20.

Wilmington 209-U sees first student COVID-19 case of the year

With the new school year underway and a majority of students in their classrooms for in-person learning, it was only a matter of time before Wilmington School District 209-U experienced its first student case of the novel coronavirus.

On Sept. 2, Superintendent Dr. Matt Swick sent an e-mail to district families, letting them know that a student at Stevens Intermediate had been diagnosed with COVID-19.

Back to school during the time of COVID-19 has been stressful for parents, students, teachers and staff.

But while managing masks, social distancing, online learning, and monitoring cases of the novel coronavirus, there’s now one thing that families don’t have to worry about — access to nutrition.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced last week that reimbursements would be made available to all school districts allowing for all children to receive free meals throughout the next few months.

209-U administrators set for the new school year

Students in Wilmington School District 209-U head back to class Wednesday, Aug. 26. But this year, things won’t be quite the same, as masks and social distancing become the norm, and some students will learn from their homes instead of the classroom.

The district’s four principals gave an update on enrollment during this month’s meeting of the 209-U board of education.

Bruning Elementary principal Beth Norman said the primary school will enroll a total of 195 students.

New teachers ready for the year in Wilmington School District 209-U

When students return to school in Wilmington 209-U this week, there will be a handful of new faces to greet them.

The district has eight new teachers for the 2020-2021 school year, each bringing their own unique abilities to the students in the district.

Here’s a chance to get to know those educators a little better:

Nikki Shell
Pre-K to Second Grade Speech Language Pathologist

Shell holds a master’s degree in health science with a focus on communication disorders.

She previously spent 14 years at Bruning as a kindergarten teacher.

Start of school delayed until Aug. 26 for Wilmington 209-U

Parents in Wilmington School District 209-U have until Wednesday, Aug, 5 to complete their online forms, opting for their children to start the 2020-2021 school year either in person or online.

After new guidance was issued by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) in late July regarding mandates for back to school procedures, the district had to make adjustments to the previous plans they’d been working on for students and staff.

The most notable change for all families is a change of the start date for the first day of school.

Wilmington 209-U teachers still connect with their students

The end of remote learning is just around the corner, as Wilmington School District 209-U plans to wrap up the year on Friday, May 22.

But while the last two months of school were unlike any before with students learning from their homes, teachers were still hard at work in their virtual classrooms every day.

The change to remote classrooms was a learning experience this semester for the students and the educators alike.

“I have such a wonderful group of students and parents this year,” said Lisa Langusch, Kindergarten teacher at Bruning Elementary.

Driver’s ed students left spinning their wheels

The WIlmington School District continues to organize and alter plans for wrapping up the school year, for the summer session, and looking to the fall.

While all of the students have had their day-to-day classroom activities put on hold, it’s those students enrolled in driver’s education who are seeing one of the biggest changes. While other classroom work can be completed from home, the behind-the-wheel component means students aren’t getting that required practice out on the roads.
