School District takes measures to address parking issues

Inside just the first quarter of the school year, things are running relatively smoothly in and around Reed-Custer school district properties. But, the district is facing down an issue of traffic, dealing with groups and individuals driving around parts of district properties not designed for vehicles.

On Sept. 19, assistant superintendent of operations Mark Hulbert brought the issue to the Board of Education. The board held a brief discussion regarding driving and parking at district facilities, particularly the athletic fields behind the high school and middle school campus.

New faces at the head of the class

The streets were filled with school buses once again this morning (Wednesday), as students in the Reed-Custer School District filtered back into their schools for the start of the 2018-2019 school year.

Among the new faces at Reed-Custer High School are five new staff members, including two new ELA educators, a PE teacher, a math teacher, and a new school social worker.

The new teachers sat down with The Braidwood Journal earlier this week to discuss their plans for the upcoming school year.

 

Trap shooting team lauded by School Board

Reed-Custer High School first kicked around the idea of a trap shooting team last fall. And while the team only came together in February of this year, already it’s drawn out student athletes who know how to take aim.

On July 18, members of the Board of Education welcomed team members, coaches, and parents, who started with the team in the spring as part of the Illinois High School Clay Target League.

Seven of the team’s 14 members participated at the state level in the Comets’ inaugural season.

High school gym to get a cool down

The high school graduation ceremony at Reed-Custer High School is usually a warm affair for the 100 or so graduates and their families.

But starting next year, the discomfort of the heat won’t be a problem for the celebrants and those who come to see them make their final walk.

On June 20, Superintendent Mark Mitchell told members of the Board of Education that after more than two decades, the high school gym would finally get air conditioning.

The district will pay Precision Controls $250,000 for the new unit, a price well below what the district planned.

Dinner and a show - RC invites seniors to special showing of The Secret Garden

It’s not often that folks can plan a night out in Braidwood to grab a bite and catch a play.

But the Reed-Custer High School drama department will make it a reality for local seniors, with a special performance of this year’s musical for the senior citizens of Braidwood.

On March 8, the Reed-Custer High School drama department will present a special performance of “The Secret Garden” at the district auditorium.

The night will start with a special spaghetti dinner at 5:30 p.m., followed by the musical at 6:30 p.m. Tickets for dinner and the show will cost just $5.

Industrial Tech students expand industry knowledge

As the second semester gets into full swing, the students of the Industrial Technology department at Reed-Custer High School continues to learn not just though hands-on activities, but by way of industry support.

Over the past few months, the department has gained several more industry supporters, as students learn real life applications for their education.

Jakub Stachurski of Milesi Wood Coatings visited students in the first semester, giving a lecture and demonstration about state of the art industrial wood finish coatings to all of the Industrial Technology classes.

Nagel in the spotlight for January

The Reed-Custer High School Senior Spotlight winner for the month of January is Gabe Nagel.

Gabe is the son of Philip and Joanna Nagel.

During his high school career, Gabe was involved in Scholastic Bowl, WYSE, Soccer, Wrestling, and Track. He was also a Writing Center tutor and a two-time Student of the Month.

Gabe’s teachers said he’s a great student, who brings positive energy to both school work and sports.

Mrs. Bugg called Gabe the most responsible, empathetic, mature person in the whole building.

Industrial tech class boosts students skills

Students in the Reed-Custer High School Industrial Technology program continue to boost their skills and learn real world applications as part of their day-to-day education in one of the district’s fastest growing course offerings.

On Nov. 15, RCHS Industrial Technology instructor Mark Smith gave an update to the Board of Education.

Alton in the spotlight for November

The Reed-Custer High School Senior Spotlight winner for the month of November is Madelyn Alton.

Madelyn is the daughter of Gerald and Sue Alton.

During her high school career, Madelyn has been involved in volleyball, FCCLA, RC Chatter, WYSE Team, and Math Team. She also served as a Homework Depot Tutor.

Madelyn’s teachers said she’s a natural leader who works hard.

Students attend leadership conference

Students from Reed-Custer High School got a chance this week to learn some important leadership skills from someone who has made a name for himself in the area of inspiring youth.

On Monday, Oct. 23, eight students represented RCHS at the I-8 Leadership Conference hosted by Seneca High School.
