Illinois SNAP program at risk due to errors

Congress’ “Big Beautiful Bill” which passed last summer could prove to be far more damaging to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program in Illinois than most people know. A SNAP “death penalty” is built into the budget reconciliation law.
Before we go further, there’s a caveat: The US Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) has not yet released definitive guidance for how the federal government intends to enforce the law.

The costs to Illinois’ government because of the new Republican congressional budget reconciliation law will be steep.
However, the state has some time to prepare itself, and possible Democratic gains in the US House and Senate next year might be able to reverse or mitigate some of the steepest cuts to food security and healthcare programs before the vast majority of them take effect after the 2026 elections.
