Coal City students are headed back to school

As students and families enjoy the final days of summer break, Coal City School District faculty and staff are preparing for a brand new academic year.
The first day of student attendance for the 2025-2026 school year is Wednesday, Aug. 13. Schools will operate on the first/last day dismissal schedule that will have students at the Early Childhood Center attending from 7:55 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., Elementary School and Intermediate School from 8:10 a.m. to 1:35 p.m., Middle School from 8:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. and High School students will report from 8:20 a.m. to 1:40 p.m.

Repairs at Intermediate School to start

After nearly nine months of closure, visible progress is underway at Coal City Intermediate School, where a long-awaited gymnasium repair project is set to begin later this week.
At a special meeting set for July 23, the Coal City Community Unit School District 1 Board of Education is expected to approve a contract with Colfax Corporation for asbestos removal inside the school’s north gymnasium. The bid—$85,950—was the lowest of four submitted and came in under the district’s estimates.

Coal City welcomes new teachers

Student attendance at Coal City schools began this morning and with the start the new academic year comes 14 new educators.
Staff orientation for new teachers started on Tuesday, Aug. 6 with three days of training overseen by Jennifer Kenney, the district’s director of curriculum and instruction. She was assisted by district administrators and staff members.
Joining the faculty for the 2024-2025 school year are individuals who will work across the district’s academic buildings.

Great start to an unusual school year

It’s been one week since classes resumed in the Unit 1 School District. And, in the words of the superintendent, it’s been a “great, great start to the school year.”

Unit 1 Superintendent Dr. Kent Bugg said he has heard nothing but positive comments from parents and students about the return to school.

Many parents, he said, have offered their thanks for the efforts the district took to ensure students could get back into the classroom. Bugg said many have commented how their child needed a schedule and the normalcy that school provides.

Bugg: “We’re all in this together”

    When school started last August, Unit 1 Superintendent Dr. Kent Bugg addressed the district’s faculty and staff his theme was “We’re all in this together.”  It ended up being the motto for the academic year.
    From his first day as superintendent, Bugg has set a theme to guide the district’s plans and philosophy for the school year. Recently the focus has been on developing relationships and supporting students.

Agreement reached

    Just days after the Coal City Unit 1 Education Association failed to ratify a four- year contract that would have boosted the average teacher salary by 4 percent per year, the union came to terms with the board of education on a five-year agreement with pay increases that fall under 3 percent in each of the first four years.
