Early morning fire damages commercial structure

    Coal City Police Sgt. Tom Logan was on his way to work when he noticed smoke coming from a building at 445 S. Broadway. The officer immediately notified Grundy County Dispatch Center and within minutes firefighters were on the scene.
    “We are thankful for the quick recognition of Sgt. Logan that helped to minimize the damage to the building from the fire,” Coal City Fire Chief James Sheldon said.
    The call went out a 5:45 a.m. and when fire crews rolled up to the single story commercial building smoke was showing from the roof with no visible fire.

When the Hill Family of Coal City looks back on 2017, they’re grateful for so many things; each other, their health and now their forever home thanks to Grundy Three Rivers Habitat for Humanity, along with the 70 volunteers who made their long-shot wish of owning a home a reality.
Homeowners Glen and Beth Hill, who have been married for 20 years, remember the chance they took applying for the Habitat for Humanity program; feeling “a little chicken” to explore the opportunity, but also thinking, “why not apply?”

Holiday event seeks to help children, families

    A holiday toy drive to benefit hospitalized children and local families in need will also provide a bit of holiday cheer for those who support the effort.
    The Winter Wonderland Toy Drive is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 17, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Coal City Middle School, 500 S. Carbon Hill Road.
    The event will include inflatables, cookie decorating, fitness games, bus rides to view local holiday lights and a few other surprises.

Weight limit change will affect trucks at 113

Trucks passing through the area will need to find a new way around if they need to pass over I-55 at Route 113.
The state has now banned overweight trucks from passing over the bridge that connects Braidwood to Diamond.
A letter sent in November from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) to both the village of Diamond and the city of Braidwood noted that due to structural deficiencies identified at the bridge carrying Route 113 over I-55, IDOT will now pose weight restrictions on the structure.

Keep the wreath red this holiday season

Each year fires occurring during the holiday season claim the lives of over 400 Americans, injure 1,650 more, and cause over $990 million in damage. Once again this year the Coal City Fire Protection District is asking residents to help it Keep the Wreath Red.

     Grundy County Republican voters will head to the polls in March 2018 to nominate a candidate for sheriff.
    Republicans Jason Flanders of Morris, and Ken Briley of Minooka, filed petitions seeking their party’s nomination to run for Grundy County Sheriff. The primary winner will face incumbent Sheriff Kevin Callahan in November 2018.

Help for the holidays

    Once again the people of Coal City has come together to make the holiday season brighter for families in need.
    The community food and gift distribution by the Coal City Food Pantry will assist 115 families, 320 people in all—210 adults and 110 children.
    The annual holiday food and gift distribution is Saturday, Dec. 9, so volunteers gathered this week to sort and pack donations collected during the annual door-to-door food drive sponsored by Cub Scout Pack 466.

Ullrich hustles to the finish line

    As the hustle and bustle of the holiday season gets underway, a different kind of hustle was taking place in Coal City over the weekend.
    The first annual Holiday Hustle 5K stepped off on Sunday, Nov. 26, with 111 registered participants hitting the pavement for a cause, the Coal City Backpack Program.

    The next stage of planning for a major reconstruction of South Broadway is about to get underway.
    Coal City village administrator Matt Fritz reports town officials received notice the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has signed off on a village contribution agreement, a document that serves as a necessary step in moving forward with its phase two engineering plan. The village now awaits receipt of the signed document from the state agency.

Scouting for food

    As members of the Boy Scouts of America, Scouts pledge to follow Scout law which requires them to be, among other things—helpful, courteous, kind and loyal.  Through its annual holiday food drive,  Cub Scout Pack 466 seeks to display those characteristics and keep their promise to help others.
