Comet kickers pick up two wins, prepare for Regional

    The Reed-Custer varsity boys soccer team is gaining momentum before heading into Regional, winning two of their last three matches.
    The Comets highlighted their week with a 6-1 win over Clifton Central on Monday during senior night.
    “I think we are playing some decent soccer right now,” said Comet coach Andy Gleixner. “We knew early on that our schedule wasn’t too friendly, and it has been a little better here at the end.”

Coalers drop two games, play Lisle Thursday before entering Regional

    The Coal City varsity boys soccer team suffered two conference losses in a row, falling to Peotone and Streator.
    Two losses just before the playoffs aren’t something anny coach wants to see. However, the Coalers will be looking to gain some steam before Regional kicks off next Wednesday.
    On Thursday, the Coalers competed against Peotone, where they were outpaced 4-1.
    Sean McGouirk recorded the lone goal for the Coalers, as Ben Hawkins finished with an assist.

Wildcats drop Survivors Cup, prepare for Regional on Friday

    The Wilmington varsity boys soccer team dropped three matches last week to Reed-Custer, Grant Park and Plano.
    The Wildcats took on the Comets last Tuesday, as they competed in their annual Survivors Cup series, with the winner earning the traveling trophy.
    Wilmington has had Reed-Custer’s number the past few years, winning the trophy three years in a row since the creation of the Survivors Cup.
    Unfortunately, the Comets were able to take this year’s  trophy with an 8-0 shutout over Wilmington.

Coaler kickers rolling through the I-8

    The Coal City varsity boys soccer team is on a roll, earning second in the Ottawa Invitational on Saturday.
    Coal City wound up going 2-1 on the day, picking up wins over Sandwich and Kirkland Kiawatha, extending their overall record to 11-3-1.
    In the first game, the Coalers defeated Sandwich 4-0. Goals came from Nolan O’Keefe, Ben Hawkins, Austin Planeta and Alex Friddle.
    Unfortunately, Coal City ran out of gas in the second game of the day, playing a back-to-back against the host team, Ottawa.

Comets battle with JCA

    The Reed-Custer varsity boys soccer team put up a valiant fight Monday night, but came up short 2-1 to Joliet Catholic Academy.
    The Comets recording seven shots on net, while JCA had 10.
    By halftime, the score was separated by one goal, as JCA slotted their first for the 1-0 lead.
    In the second half, Reed-Custer got on the board thanks to a goal from Christian Williams, assisted by Gabe Nagel.
    Unfortunately, JCA would hold on to a one-goal lead in the second half, winning the game, and handing Reed-Custer their 14th loss of the season.

Coaler kickers extend winning streak

    The Coal City varsity boys soccer team had a stellar showing this past week, picking up three wins, including two in the conference.
    “We have been playing really well, and I feel like we are getting better each game,” said coach Steven McCleary. “We have a tough schedule coming up in a couple of weeks, and we will see where we will fit in. Hopefully we are right where we want to be.”
    On Monday, the Coalers (8-2-1) defeated Wilmington with a shutout victory, 8-0.

Comets playing better, drop three

    Reed-Custer’s varsity boys soccer team put up a good fight on Saturday, but  wound up with a loss to Bishop McNamara, 3-2.
    The Comets came out a little sluggish at the start of the first half, but eventually found their rhythm, and wound up tied at halftime, 1-1.
    Christian Williams recorded his first goal of the day off a free kick outside the box, hitting the top right corner of the goal.
    Both teams traded one goal a piece in the second half as well, with Austin Termaine drawing a foul in the box for a penalty kick, which Williams scored.

Wildcat soccer team continues to improve

    Wilmington’s boys soccer team hasn’t had the season they truly want.
    The Wildcats are without a win, but they are still young, and have plenty of positives.
    “These are the growing pains we are experiencing right now, but we try to make a few team goals that we try to work on and find success at,” said Wilmington soccer coach David Blackburn. “I think a lot of it is we have the deer in a headlights look when we are going against opponents a little bit bigger than us. They blow right past us, not because of skill, but because they have a few years on us.”

Blue Devils too hot for the Comets

    The Reed-Custer varsity boys soccer team traveled to Peotone on Thursday where they faced the red-hot Blue Devils
    The Comets (0-7 overall, 0-3 conference) spent most of their time playing defense as the Blue Devils won it 8-0.
    Peotone peppered goalkeeper Nathan Minuth all game, putting 20 shots on goal, with Minuth earning 12 saves through the two halves.
    Reed-Custer managed just three shots on goal, as they were shutout in the conference game.

Coalers clinch second in Streator

    Coal City’s varsity boys soccer team took second place during the Streator Invitiational this past weekend, going 2-0-1 on the day, while placing second through a tie breaker.
    In the first game of the tournament, the Coalers picked up a 3-0 win over Sandwich.
    Alex Friddle paved the way with one goal and two assists, while Jason Wexelberg added a goal, and was assisted by Keegan Johnson.
    In the second game, Coal City wound up tying Streator, 0-0, as Hunter Bannon finished with eight saves in net.
