Village sees 400% increase in home solar permits

The year 2023 was the year more Coal City residents took a strong interest in solar power.

The Coal City Building Department saw a 400% increase in issuing permits for home solar projects, resulting in approximately 35 homes now being power by the sun.

There were 12 permits issued for new residential installations, that’s up from three the year before and the most issued in a single year.

Village Board gives OK for new restaurant

Silver Dollar Restaurant Group is opening an eatery in Coal City.

Bimak, Inc., represented by Mony Iljazi, recently acquired the commercial property at 435 W. Division St., and plans to reopen the doors to the restaurant space that was previously LaPizza.

The Iljazi family, owners of a handful of other restaurants, will open the space under a new name and concept sometime in 2024.

According to its business plan, the restaurant group is “renowned for its commitment to quality ingredients, exceptional customer service and a vibrant atmosphere.”

Increased EAV will provide additional dollars for village

It’s tax levy time—that time of year when public bodies determine the amount of property tax dollars are necessary to operate in the coming fiscal year.

The village of Coal City projects it will need to collect $2.96 million. Although the amount to be collect represents a 3% increase, the resulting tax rate will drop a couple of cents to 1.98.

Village Administrator Matt Fritz said there are three major factors for the resulting tax rate to remain at the same level as last year. At the top of the list is the total assessed valuation of the village is increasing.

New guidelines in place for residential construction in Coal City

Coal City’s Planning and Zoning Board has been working on amendments to the town’s residential design guidelines and village trustees have adopted the recommendations.

The residential design guidelines were first adopted in 2006 and the changes adopted last week are the first to come before the Village Board for consideration and approval.

The changes focused on property setbacks.

Vandalism to Hope Helps playground once again addressed with Coal City Village Board

For at least the third time Brittney Kaluzny stood before the Coal City Village Board last week to address the vandalism that keeps occurring at Hope Helps All-inclusive Playground.
On two other occasions, Kaluzny was told there would be additional police patrols in the park and town officials also discussed reviewing the surveillance system that’s in place.

Mincey appointed to Coal City Village Board

One of the first decisions Dave Spesia had to make as the village’s new mayor, was who would take his seat at the table as trustee.

The decision took him back to a chance meeting he had with Bill Mincey.

While campaigning for mayor, Spesia would drive around town and the various subdivisions and when he saw a resident outside he would pull over, introduce himself and engage in conversation.

Coal City signs onto county mitigation plan

The village of Coal City will participate in Grundy County’s 2020 multi-jurisdictional natural hazards mitigation plan.

The Village Board approved the document that steps the county and the community on what steps to take after natural hazards including severe storms, tornados and drought.

The plan includes projects within the county and each of the 11 communities that participated.

Each of the projects included in the multi-page document are aimed to reduce the impact of natural hazards on citizens, visitors, infrastructure, property and critical facilities.

Coal City partners with restaurant to access funding

In an ongoing effort to support small businesses forced to close their doors during the initial phases of the coronavirus pandemic, the village of Coal City is partnering with business owners who are seeking access to federal funds.

Last week the Village Board pledged its support for a $25,000 request from the Downstate Stabilization Grant program to assist LaPiazza Ristorante.

As the state of Illinois begins to re-open under phase three of Gov. JB Pritzker’s Restore Illinois plan, local municipalities are extending a hand to businesses looking to offer outdoor dining.

Restaurants and bars that were formerly set to only be able to maintain curbside pickup can now operate outdoors with a full wait staff. Coal City Village Administrator Matt Fritz said this has been something the town has wanted to be able to accommodate as soon as businesses got the go ahead to move forward.

Coal City businesses sign on to revolving loan program

The village of Coal City is offering loans to businesses impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, and the first two were handed out last week.
The village is offering interest-free loans of up to $2,000 per business through the COVID-19 Revolving Loan Fund. Funds will be distributed on a first-come, first- served basis through Dec. 30 or until funds have been depleted.
Last month, village trustees approved the loan program designating $50,000 from the town’s facade improvement program into the fund.
