Coalers set to 'duke' it out with Dixon

One team has averaged 48.2 points per game while allowing just 10.1. The other has averaged 42.2 while giving up just 9.1.
Sounds like quite the recipe for a quarterfinal clash.
The 10-1 Dixon Dukes will head to Coal City for Saturday's Class 4A battle against the 9-2 Coalers at 1 p.m.
Dixon plays in the very tough Big Northern conference where six of the 10 teams made the playoffs.
The Dukes had little trouble with Chicago Ag in the second round, scoring at least 50 points for the sixth time in 11 games (51-6).

Village trustees so far like plans for $12 million senior housing plan

Plans to build a senior living subdivision in Coal City are moving along after city officials expressed their support for the project during an Oct. 25 meeting.
Appearing before the Village Board of Trustees, representatives from North Arrow Partners presented their designs for Hunter’s Run, a 44-unit townhouse development for people age 55 and older.
“The site lends itself well to a senior community,” North Arrow’s John Cronin explained. Cronin appeared before the village board along with North Arrow project manager Jonathan Chance.

Free haunted house with a sweet ending

For families in Coal City, Halloween just isn’t complete without a visit to Catherine Burson and Jeremy Clubb’s free haunted house.
Every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in October, the couple opens their haunted trail and shelter at 975 E. 4th Street to the community, providing spooky thrills and family-friendly fun, complete with live actors, games and treats.
“We started out with just a few animatronics inside the house,” Burson explained. “It grew from there and people loved it. Eventually, we moved it outside, and now it’s become a full family production.”

Eagle Scout wants community to enjoy outdoor chess

Hunter Patterson believes Coal City families should play games together, and he knows exactly how to make that happen.
An Eagle Scout candidate, Patterson loves chess, and he wants to share his passion for the game with the community.
The Eagle Scout Service Project is the opportunity for a scout in the Boy Scouts of America, to demonstrate leadership of others while performing a project for the benefit of the community.

Ready to be razed

The demolition of two homes on South Broadway Street, just north of the Coal City Post Office, will soon begin.
Village trustees approved the low bid submitted by J.K. Trotter Enterprises of Coal City to raze 425 and 435 S. Broadway for a cost not to exceed $49,670.56.
The village purchased the two homes in November of last year, noting at the time they were non-conforming residents in an area where the comprehensive plan designates commercial use.

Coalers shutout Normal U-High to advance in playoffs

Coal City running back Landin Benson scored five TDs while Gavin Carpenter capped the rain-soaked night with a 35-yarder to lead the Coalers to a 44-0 victory over visiting Normal U-High Friday night. The #8 seeded Coalers (8-2) will travel to Rochester (10-0) on Friday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. for round two of the Class 4A playoffs.

The Coaler defense was impressive, allowing Normal U just 61 yards of total offense while the offense opened gaps for Benson to have touchdown runs of 3, 4, 27, 3 and 11 yards. They also ran in four PATs as it wasn't a night for kicking a slippery ball.

Surpises were few during first week of playoffs

And then there were 16. That’s how many teams are left in each of the eight classes of the IHSA football playoffs as winning teams move on to the second round.
Wilmington (2A), Reed-Custer (3A) and Coal City (4A) all advance to the second round after winning on Saturday. The Wildcats (9-1) will host Tri-Valley Downs (8-2) at 6 p.m. Saturday, Reed-Custer (10-0) will play saturday at 5 p.m. against visiting Pecatonica - Du-Pec Coop (8-2) while the Coalers (7-3) have a four-hour drive to Carterville (10-0) near Marion, IL for a 1 p.m. kickoff Saturday.

Coal City residents paying tornado tax

The village of Coal City will levy a tornado tax upon residents to cover the unexpected costs of the June 2015 storm.

Just weeks after the powerful EF-3 tornado struck the community on the evening of June 22, 2015, town leaders issued bonds to cover storm-related costs.

The village had to pledge alternative revenue bonds to raise the funds necessary for immediate recovery after the storm.

Spreading a message of help, hope and healing

There is a heaviness in the air, a sense of loss noticed in every corner of the community and it prompted a local resident to reach out for guidance and direction in lifting the weight of such loss.

A few months ago, Marla Hook called on local funeral director Matt Baskerville to share this feeling of heaviness she felt across the town.

Petitions circulating for local elections

Representatives for municipal, township, library, school, park and fire districts began circulating nominating petitions on Tuesday for the consolidated election in April 2021.
Candidates have until mid-December to collect the signatures necessary to get their names on the ballot. The number of signatures obtained from registered voters within the district, community or township they are seeking to represent is based on the number of votes cast in the prior consolidated election.
