Miners undo Bobcats at almost all levels

POUNDING AHEAD through the Wilmington line is Coal City Junior Varsity Miner Drake Heath.

The Coal City Miners youth football team almost had a total teams sweep for the second week in a row. They won three of four games played Saturday against Wilmington after sweeping the Jr. Comets the week before.
The Superlight Miners fell to the Bobcats, 13-0. On offense, the Miners played well, but just fell short of making it in the endzone. The line did what was expected and plays were ran as planned. Offense will make some adjustments this week and be ready for next week.
On defense, Cooper Lardi had some big hits. Mikey Tworek forced a fumble, which was recovered by Cole Coleman. Defense also played well and held Wilmington up, aside from two breakaway plays. The Miners players kept a great attitude, a lot was learned and fun was had.
The Miners Lightweights were victorious on Saturday after being down 12-0 at halftime. The Miners big impact players were Drake Figge, with multiple touchdowns, and TJ Wagner with big plays on both sides of the ball. We had great runs by Eddie Gergits and Austin Newman. Defensively, the Miners were led by the D line stopping Wilmington in the 2nd half. Special teams Mason Dixon had a fumble recovery on kickoff. Miners won the game 20-19.
The Junior Varsity Miners upended Wilmington, 20-13. The offensive led by Gryson Johnson, Ryder Schoenwald, Cooper Winke, William Teague, Brody Bitner, William Rodriguez, and Carter Thill paved the way for our three touchdowns.
Touchdowns were scored by Drake Heath, Kason Bluth, and Zack Babcock. The defensive line, led by Brent Stark, Blake Jones, and Cody Allen kept pressure all game. We are excited about the way the season has started and will continue to work to get better.
The Miners Varsity defense continues to dominate. They put up another impressive shut out with a 22-0 win over Wilmington. The defensive line was disruptive the Bobcat backfield almost every play. The outstanding line play was led by DT Jaxen Shimp and Nick Miller and DES, Frank Roehr and Cade Krull.
On offense the Miners scored at will, including a 40-yard TD run on their first offensive play by RB Levi Marshall. The Miners offensive line, led by G Max Christensen, proved too much for the Bobcats defense. Christensen, and his crew of tackles Nick Miller, Cade Krull and G Cody Kozloski and center Jaxen Shimp dominated the offensive push.
On special teams, Kicker Spencer Vaira went 2-for-3 on the day for extra points and punt returner Max Christensen set the Miners offense up on a 25 yard punt return for the Miners final score.
The Miners will travel to Morris on Saturday, Aug. 24 to take on the Morris Chiefs.
