Coal City soccer caps historic season with a state trophy

The Coalers achieved a milestone in program history Friday, capturing third place during the 2025 IHSA Class 1A Boys Soccer State Finals.
After a tough semifinal loss to Mendota on Thursday night, they bounced back with a dominant 6-1 victory over the Chicago Academy Cougars on Friday at Hoffman Estates High School.
Coal City finishes with a 24-4 record. Their defensive performance stood out: entering the third-place game, they had allowed only 14 goals in 28 games (about 0.5 goals per game).

Fast attack ‘Cats to square off against undefeated Seneca

The Wilmington Wildcats will hit the road Saturday to face a familiar foe — the undefeated Seneca Fighting Irish (10-0) — in the second round of the Class 2A football playoffs. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Seneca.
Seneca, led by head coach Terry Maxwell, captured the Chicagoland Prairie Conference title this fall behind a dominant ground game and stingy defense. Through 10 games, the Fighting Irish have outscored opponents 439–165, averaging more than 43 points per game while allowing just over 16.

Coalers-Dixon to 'duke' it out again

One team has averaged 50.1 points per game while allowing just 7.1.
The other has averaged 43.7 while giving up just 12.3.
Sounds like quite the recipe for a playoff battle and for the second consecutive year, the Coalers will face Dixon in the playoffs, but this time it's on the road Friday night at 7.
The Dukes play in the always tough Big Northern conference where four teams made the playoffs. Their lone loss was to unbeaten Byron 28-7 in week two and they faced little resistance from Woodstock North in the opening round, winning 45-0.

The Coalers will travel to Dixon on Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff in Round 2 of the IHSA Football Playoffs. The school is located at 300 Lincoln Statue Drive, Dixon.
Coalers fans attending the game should park in the bus parking lot located adjacent to Peoria Avenue and enter through the back gate. After parking, walk down the alley and through the drop-off lot.
The back ticket gate is located in the southwest corner of the drop-off lot.
There is construction near the school that could limit parking in the area. So fans are encouraged to carpool.

Tickets are also available in the CCHS Main Office this week from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. All fans are asked to purchase their tickets in advance prior to Saturday’s game.

Wilmington, R-C at Herscher, Coal City to compete at Seneca

As postseason play begins across Illinois, local Class 2A volleyball teams have learned their paths to the Peotone Sectional.
Wilmington and Reed-Custer will compete in the Herscher Regional, while Coal City will battle in the Seneca Regional, both beginning the week of Oct. 27.
The Herscher Regional will open Oct. 27, when (8) Herscher faces (9) Reed-Custer at 6 p.m. The winner of that match will move on to play top-seeded Wilmington on Tuesday, Oct. 28, at 6 p.m.
Following that,  (4) Pontiac takes on (5) Peotone at 7 p.m.

Wildcats to hit the road to face Herscher

The Wildcats will look to keep their winning momentum rolling Friday night when they travel to Herscher for their second conference clash.
Both teams come in with identical 2-1 records, setting up what should be a hard-fought matchup.
The Tigers are coming off a big 28-23 victory over Manteno last week, scoring 14 points in both the second and third quarters before holding off a late Panthers surge.

The Coal City Miners Superlights fell to Manteno Wildcats, 20-12. In the first quarter Oakley Parks opened with a couple of solid 5-yard runs. Jacob Thill made a standout tackle for a loss, setting the tone early. Jacob Thill made a standout tackle for a loss, setting the tone early.
In the second quarter Parks broke through with a 10-yard run. Merik delivered a huge 10-yard sack. Cardosi followed up with a tackle for loss.
Special Teams: Kade executed a perfect onside kick, recovered by Schmitz momentum shift.

Coal City Miners take on Chanooka Braves

The Coal City Miners Superlights fell short against the Chanooka Braves by a score 31-14 on Sunday, Aug. 24. In the first quarter the defense came out swinging for the Miners. The defensive line forced a massive 10-yard fumble loss. Oakley Parks delivered a clutch stop, forcing a fumble and turnover. Provance showed grit on the line, pushing through for a key loss.
For special teams Henry made a standout save on the front line, keeping the Braves from breaking through.

Helicopter to drop 2,600 weiners for an attempt at world record

On Tuesday, July 22, the Joliet Slammers are partnering with Pabst Light to attempt the world record for most hot dogs dropped by helicopter in one hour to celebrate the brand’s newest beer release.
The Slammers will be dropping 2,600 packaged hot dogs for fans to enjoy in between one of the games’ inning breaks.
