Comets, Coalers and Wildcats get to host in football playoffs

There won’t be any Friday Night Lights turned on for three area teams entering the first round of the IHSA football playoffs as Coal City, Reed-Custer and Wilmington will play on Saturday.
All three programs get to host teams in the first round, although they are all in different brackets.
Braidwood will host the Chicago Carver Challengers (5-3) at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Comets (9-0) are the #2 seed in the Class 3A bracket. They are among three other teams who are undefeated.

Stiles at State

Good luck to Coal City junior Abby Stiles who is competing in the state tennis finals Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Rolling Meadows High School.

Stiles finished third at #2 singles play during the Ottawa Sectional on Saturday to advance to Class 1A state.

She defeated Madison Kenyon, a junior from Marian Woodstock, in the first round 4-6, 6-2, 10-5, before falling 6-2, 6-1 to Crystina Lee from Timothy Christian in round two.

Comets' firepower too much for Coalers

After the mud quit flying on a rainy Friday in Coal City, the result was a familiar one for the Reed-Custer football team (8-0), a 58-14 win, but it was anything but easy.

In fact, they actually trailed for the first time this season as Coal City (5-3) struck first, finding success through the air with Gavin Carpenter.

"Hats off to Coal City for coming out and swinging a haymaker at us right away. The Carlson kid had a lot more speed than we were ready for," said R-C coach Gavin Johnston.

"He had some nice routes and some really good throws by Braden Reilly."

Coalers looking to improve playoff seeding at Streator

Sitting at 5-3, the Coal City football team will wrap up the regular season Friday at Streator, hoping to improve their playoff position with that all-important sixth victory.

The Bulldogs are coming off a 57-6 loss to Wilmington, a game in which they gave up 468 yards on the ground and have dropped five straight games.

"We've got to get back to what we do well and I think this is a week where we can get back to that rushing attack we do so well," said CC coach Francis Loughran.

Lady Coalers win on eve of regionals

The Varsity Lady Coalers beat Reed-Custer in two games Thursday, 25-18 and 25-12. This brings their overall record to 22-7 and 12-1 in the Illinois Central Eight Conference and gives them the top seed in the Seneca Regional.

Addyson Waliczek had 15 setting assists, 4 digs, 3 kills, 2 service aces. Kayla Henline had 10 setting assists, 3 aces, 2 kills, 2 digs, and 1 block.

Emma Rodriguez had 8 kills and 3 digs. Kenzi Henline had 6 kills, 5 digs, and 1 block. Bella Veraveic had 5 kills, 2 digs, 1 service ace and 1 block.

Paying in cash will cost you more during the playoffs

Cash isn’t always king when it comes to future attendance at IHSA state series sporting events.

The IHSA Board approved a recommendation to change ticket prices for those paying in cash vs. using the GoFan ticketing app on their phone.

That means football playoff rounds that require GoFan, the cost of cash tickets will be one dollar more than the cost of the digital GoFan ticket.

This will also apply if a host school chooses to use GoFan in a State Series round when GoFan it is not required.

Comets present toughest test yet for Coalers

The Coalers will face a difficult task in trying to slow down 7-0 Reed-Custer when they head to Coal City for Senior Night Friday.
The Comets are averaging an astonishing 59.7 points per game and are coming off a 73-14 win over Streator, a game in which they recorded 528 yards of total offense with 304 coming on the ground.
"We've definitely got a challenge this week. Reed-Custer is a very good team. I'm excited for our guys because they will work and rise up to the challenge," said Coaler coach Francis Loughran.

The Lady Coaler didn’t skip a beat on Thursday, upending Streator in two, 25-16 and 25-20. The win improves their overall record to 20-7.
