Young Coaler fans need to be accompanied by an adult at football games

The City Coaler football team opens the 2023 season with a home game against Morris Friday, and the start of a new season brings a change in the school’s attendance guidelines.

High school administration announced on Tuesday that due to safety and behavior concerns, the school district will now require all elementary and middle school students to be accompanied by an adult.

Students who arrive without an adult or not in possession of a high school identification card will be turned away at the gate.

CC kickers fall to Plainfield

The Coal City soccer team lost 7-0 Monday night to Plainfield Central.

Coal City’s freshman goal keeper, Carter Nicholson, had a busy night and ended with 15 saves. He showed really good skill and instincts in his first high school career game against a tough opponent.

Coal City will face Gibson City/Fisher for their home opener today, Wednesday.

Lady Coalers fall in season opener

The Lady Coaler varsity volleyball team lost its season opener to Prairie Central on Monday, 18-25 and 24-26.

Aubrey Mellen had 13 setting assists and 3 digs. Kayla Henline had 6 setting assists, 4 digs, and 1 block.

Emma Rodriguez had 9 kills, 9 digs, and 1 block. Kenzi Henline had 3 kills, Addison Hodgen had 2 kills, Paige Walker had 7 digs and 1 kill while Jadyn Shaw had 6 digs.

The JV Lady Coalers beat Prairie Central 25-9, 21-25, and 25-18.

The freshmen Coalers lost to Prairie Central 25-20 and 25-19.

The Megan’s Mission 5K run/walk to end childhood cancer is quickly approaching and there is still time to sign up.

Proceeds will support the Megan’s Mission Foundation that is dedicated to honoring Megan Bugg’s goal of ending childhood cancer through advocacy, research and scholarship.

Set for Saturday, Sept. 16, the race will get underway at 6 p.m. in the 600 block of S. Broadway in Coal City. Babe’s Tap will serve as the host location for run. The course will take racers south on Broadway to Reed Road and then back north into the village.

CC gold team gets swinging

The Coal City boys golf season kicked off the season Monday at the Bill Breedan Classic Invite at Kankakee Elks Golf Course.

The boys finished with a team score of 368. Ryland Megyeri led the Coalers and finish 7th overall out of 60 golfers.

The Coal City girls golf team started its season in a match at The Oaks at Rivers Edge Golf Course in Pontiac. They competed against Eureka, Feildcrest, and Pontiac. The girls finished 3rd with a score of 239

Emma Varnak led the Coalers with a score of 57.

Coaler 7th graders get it done in five

The 7th grade Coaler baseball team walked away from a doubleheader on Saturday with at least one win against a tough Bourbonnais team.

Coal City erupted with seven runs with two outs in the bottom of the second and three more in the third to defeat the visitors 11-1 in five innings.

The Coalers racked up six runs including two hits and two RBIs each for Kiptyn Dearth and Connor Rodriguez. Jonah Micetich doubled and walked for three RBIs.

The Coal City Middle School A baseball team evened its record at 2-2 after dropping a 7-2 contest against a toughh Bourbonnais time on Saturday.

Caiden Tourigny started on the mound and went 5 innings allowing 6 runs/2 earned on 6 hits while striking out 6 and walking 2. Colten Lynn threw 2 innings giving up 1 unearned on 1hit with 1K and 1 walk.

Tourigny was 2-for-4 with a double. Dillon Ness was 2-for-2(RBI). Dougie Bedinger (RBI), and Trtevor Walker added hits.

Miners get the best of Sandwich

The Coal City Miners junior football teams won three out of four levels play Sunday agaist Sandwich.

The Coal City Superlights were led by Quarterback Cole Watson's rushing efforts of two touchdowns, with assistance from Eddie Gergits and Brady Loughran with long runs.

Defense held strong for another shutout victory. Eddie Gergits led the defense with a forced fumble and several tackles, assisted by tackles from Brayden Plata, Jacob Harris, and Brady Loughran.

GSWB basebal doubles up on Donovan

The Gardner South-Wilmington’s A baseball team had a double header against Donovan on Saturday and improved their record with two wins.
In game 1 of the twinbill, GSWB defeated Donovan 6-1. Case Christensen got the start on the mound for GSWB.Christensen would toss five innings while surrendering five hits while fanning seven at the plate.
Caden Christensen reached base via error in the second, stole second then was sacrificed to third by Thomas Phillips.

Lady Coalers advance to soccer sectional title

The Coal City girls soccer team will play for the Sectional Championship at 4:30 p.m. on Friday in Manteno after beating Chicago University 2-1 in the opening round on Tuesday.
The Lady Coalers will battle Herscher for the title, a tough opponent yes, but they can be beat.
Chicago University went up 1-0 at halftime on Tuesday. Kylee Kennel, assisted by Maddie Gomez, kept Coal City in running with a goal in the second half to tie it 1-1. The game-winning PK was scored by Cara Planeta (handball in box).
