Coalers matmen advance to Elite Eight

The Coal City wrestling is so far on track to defend their 1A state dual team title.

The Coalers dispatched Chicago (De La Salle) easily on Tuesday night, 60-15, during the Coal City Sectional to advance to Friday's State Finals at Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington.

Can the Coalers beat the Wildcats for the second time this season?
Coaler fans will find out tonight (Wednesday) at 7:30 p.m. in Manteno during the semifinal round of the regional.
The Coalers (#8 seed) are coming off a 62-53 win over Southland College Prep on Monday as they improve to 13-17 overall.
The first two times these ICE rivals played, Wilmington (#4) won 45-24 and 47-32. Most recently Coal City defeated Wilmington at home 47-40.

FRIDAY UPDATE: Eight Coalers still wrestling

Two Coal City wrestlers still have a shot at becoming state champions after winning during the quarterfinal round of the IHSA Individual State wrestling tournament on Friday.

Brody Widlowski (126) and Landin Benson (165) advance to the semifinals Saturday where they need to win in order to wrestle for the Class 1A championship starting at 6 p.m. Saturday night.

Eight area wrestlers survive first round at state

Eight of 16 area wrestlers won today during the preliminary round of the IHSA state wrestling finals.

All eight are from Coal City with five taking their opponents out by pin. Advancing to Friday's quarterfinal round will be Coalers Owen Peterson (106) who won by 4-0 decision, Cooper Morris (113) who won by 6:00 fall, Culan Lindemuth (120) by 6-0 decision, Brody Widlowski (126) fall in 3:40, Mason Garner (138) by major dec. 13-0, Brant Widlowski (150) 1:00 fall, Landin Benson (165) with 3:39 pin and Cade Poyner (190) with a 3:26 fall.

Girls flag football league being planned

The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) is proud to announce that Girls Flag Football will be the latest sport to debut an IHSA State Series, as the IHSA will conduct its inaugural postseason, culminating with an IHSA Girls Flag Football State Champion being crowned, in the fall of 2024.

Coalers shutout Normal U-High to advance in playoffs

Coal City running back Landin Benson scored five TDs while Gavin Carpenter capped the rain-soaked night with a 35-yarder to lead the Coalers to a 44-0 victory over visiting Normal U-High Friday night. The #8 seeded Coalers (8-2) will travel to Rochester (10-0) on Friday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. for round two of the Class 4A playoffs.

The Coaler defense was impressive, allowing Normal U just 61 yards of total offense while the offense opened gaps for Benson to have touchdown runs of 3, 4, 27, 3 and 11 yards. They also ran in four PATs as it wasn't a night for kicking a slippery ball.

Wildcats stay in 2A, Coalers #8 in 4A football playoffs

For the third straight year Wilmington will play in the class 2A football playoffs while Coal City with battle in class 4A.

The Wildcats were teetering between 2A and 3A before getting help Saturday afternoon when a game between two Chicago schools with 4-4 records ended up being won by the school with the bigger enrollment. That guaranteed the ‘Cats the #5 seed in the 2A north bracket which includes four undefeated schools.

Coaler soccer gets regional win

The Coal City soccer team won their first round of regionals Wednesday by defeating Bishop Mac in the rain 5-1.

Timi Shabani, Trey Buck, Dylan Fatlan, Creed Macaluso, and Colton Lemmons all scored goals for Coal City. Carter Nicholson had 11 saves for the game.

Coal City will now play Herscher Saturday morning at 10:00 at Reed Custer High School. 

Coaler kickers spend more time on defense

Coal City was defeated by Lisle on Tuesday by the score of 1-4 and Beecher Wednesday 1-7.

In the Lisle game, Dane Noffsinger scored the lone goal for the Coalers. Carter Nicholson had a nice game with 13 saves.

In the Beecher game, Beecher controlled most of the game and played really well. Carter Nicholson was very busy in the goal with 17 saves on the night.

Timi Shabani got his first goal of the season. Coal City has some young talent that is learning to play a fast, physical game.

They have had a tough beginning of the season with an 0-5-1 record.

CC golfers impressive against Reed-Custer

Starters for the Coal City golf team looked calm and collected when they took the #1 tee at High Point Golf Course in Essex on Thursday.

Their opponents, Reed-Custer, with only eight on the team this year, paired off with one golfer per two for Coal City.

The win for Coal City ended up being by 56 strokes as the Coalers won is 163 to 219.

Coaler Ryland Megyeri made it look easy as he drilled his opening shot down the middle of the fairway enroute to a medalist round 36. The next best score was by Coaler Jack Varnak with a 41.
