I-8 Conference getting closer to a decision

    What’s the I-8 Conference going to do now that Seneca is leaving in the fall of 2018?
    No one knows for sure but the public may have an answer within a couple of weeks. Decision-makers within the Interstate Eight will be holding a meeting the first week of May.
    “We have been working with some other schools, interviewing some schools, to see if there is a good fit to be a replacement for Seneca at this time,” said Tom Sodaro, I-8 Conference President and principal at Sandwich High School.

Coalers continue streak, win six more

    Coal City’s varsity baseball team kept the wins coming on Monday, as they defeated Seneca in conference action, 3-0.
    Coaler Payton Hutchings was dominant on the mound, as he limited the host team to only a single in a 98-pitch shutout performance.
    The freshman pitcher struck out 13 batters faced and walked only two in his fourth win of the season.

Lady Coalers earn two conference wins over Peotone, Lisle

    The Coal City varsity softball team left too many runners stranded on base Monday against Seneca  and ended up losing 8-2.
    The Lady Coalers left six runners idle despite recording eight hits, as they were unable to push the much needed runs across.
    Abbie Cullick and Elaina Bach both scored one run, as Madison Emerson and Sam Olsen both had the RBIs.
    Emerson and Cali Caruso led the offense, going 2-for-3 on the day. Emerson’s two hits were both doubles.

Coaler track teams compete in Irish Invitational

    Coal City’s varsity boys and girls track teams traveled to Seneca on Friday, where they competed in the 15-team Irish Invitational.
    The Lady Coalers wound up earning 20 team points, placing 11th, as they tied with Beecher.
    They finished ahead of four other teams, including Bishop McNamara, Ottawa, Serena and Indian Creek.
    On the boys side, Coal City earned an eighth place team finish with 34 points, beating out seven other teams that included Wilmington, Beecher and Dwight.

Lady Coalers pick up three wins in I-8 conference

    The Coal City varsity softball team returned to a winning record in the I-8 on Monday, as they picked up a 2-1 win over Lisle.
    The Lady Coalers (4-7 overall, 3-2 conference) trailed 1-0 after Lisle recorded a home run in the second inning. However, that would be the Lion’s only run of the game, as Coal City gained the lead.
    Blaire Harseim tied the game back up at one run a piece, hitting a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Makenna Crater after tagging up.

Coalers gaining steam with five of six wins this past week

    The Coal City varsity baseball team kept the wins coming on Monday, as they defeated Lisle in conference action, 2-0.
    The Coalers (11-5 overall, 4-1 conference) were helped on the mound by Payton Hutchings, who threw a 100-pitch shutout. He allowed just four hits, two walks and struck out nine.
    He has allowed no runs through 10 consecutive innings of work.
    Keegan Gagliardo and Blake Harseim both singled and scored in the fourth inning, as Austin Friddle knocked in the games only RBI.

Lady Coalers win big over Kankakee, Wilmington

    The Coal City varsity girls soccer team was in the driver’s seat Monday night, as they came away with a big win over Kankakee, 4-2.
    While the game served as non-conference, the Lady Coalers still added one to the win column, improving to 3-4 overall (1-2 conference).
    All of Coal City’s four goals were scored in the first half.
    Sophomore forward Helen Onsen and junior midfielder Bridget Kauzlaric both recorded two goals, as Syndi Bortles picked up one assist.

Joliet West edges Coaler tennis team

    The Coal City varsity tennis squad hosted Joliet West on Monday, where the opposition squeaked out a win over the Coalers.
    Coal City wound up losing the match 3-2, with the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams credited with the wins.
    No. 2 doubles Bryce Perino and Christian Overton mounted a comeback against their opponents after dropping the first set 6-4. They won the second, 6-2, and were able to clinch a victory with a 10-5 win in the third set.

Ken W. Miller returning to Coaler football

    When Ken W. Miller announced his retirement back in 2013, he held on to the hope that one day he might return to the sidelines as a coach.
    Now, with athletic director Dan Hutchings taking over the Coal City varsity football program,  Miller will return as an assistant.
    “He goes around and watches a lot of practices,” said Hutchings. “We were just talking, and I offered to see if he would be interested in coming back. We had a spot, and he is.”

Lady Coalers pick up first win, split series with Joliet West

    The Coal City varsity softball team earned its first win of the season on Saturday, when they split a double-header with Joliet West.
    The Lady Coalers (1-5 overall, 0-1 conference) dropped the first game in five innings, losing by 10 runs, 11-1, but rallied back in the second game to win it, 6-3.
    Coal City recorded its only run of the first game in the first inning.
    Sydney Miller got thing started, as she was hit by a pitch to advance to first. She reached third on a sacrifice from Abbie Cullick, who reached on an error.
