CC golfers win over Wilmington

The Coal City boys golf team won the varsity and junior varsity rounds against Wilmington last week at Highpoint Golf Course in Essex.
The Coalers scored a 179 to the hosting Wildcat’s 201.
Jerry Carlson was medalist of the match with a low 41 while Culan Lindemuth carded a 44, Jaxon Duke a 46 and Frankie Ponio a 48. Turning in a 52 was Trevor Perino and 53 for Griffin Winke.

Miners undo Bobcats at almost all levels

The Coal City Miners youth football team almost had a total teams sweep for the second week in a row. They won three of four games played Saturday against Wilmington after sweeping the Jr. Comets the week before.
The Superlight Miners fell to the Bobcats, 13-0. On offense, the Miners played well, but just fell short of making it in the endzone. The line did what was expected and plays were ran as planned. Offense will make some adjustments this week and be ready for next week.

Coal City athletes must register by Aug. 12

Coaler athletes planning to participate in a fall sport at Coal City High School-cheerleading, boys soccer, football, girls tennis, golf or volleyball-must register prior to the first day of practices on Aug. 12.

Coalers win state trophy and a 1st place medal

It was a good weekend for the Coaler track and field teams.
Coal City Middle School eighth grader Phil Larson is a state champion and set a new state record.
Larson cleared 11 feet, 7 inches in the pole vault at the Illinois Elementary School Association [IESA] State Track and Field Finals on Saturday. His vault is the new class 3A record.
It was a good weekend overall for the Coalers as the seventh grade boys team brought home the first-ever state trophy for the middle school as they finished in fourth place with 30.5 points.

Coalers jump on Bulldogs early to win

The Coal City baseball team needed only five innings to be rid of the Streator Bulldogs, beating them 17-5.
Coal City took an early lead in the first inning scoring four runs while Streator only put up two. Coal City remained hot at the plate scoring another four runs in the second and five runs in the third.
Streator tried coming back scoring three runs in the top of the fourth but it wasn’t enough to even finish the game because Coal City scored another four runs in the bottom of the fourth, forcing the mercy rule.

Lady Coalers lifted by Picard in 11-3 victory

The Coal City softball team picked up win number five on Monday, defeating Streator at home 11-3.
The Lady Coalers scored two runs in the first inning and one run in the second while Streator remained scoreless. In the top of the third Streator put two runs up however Coal City scored one run in the bottom of the third.

Lady Coalers bring home a state trophy

The Coal City Middle School 7th grade volleyball team made it to the state championship match in 4A volleyball but couldn’t get past undefeated Frankfort Hickory Creek, bringing home the second place trophy on Saturday.
They become the 20th CCMS team to advance to state since 1981 and one of five teams to earn a state trophy. In 1992 the 7th graders finished in second, third in 1997 and fourth in 2010. The eighth grade Lady Coalers placed third in 2001.

JV Lady Coalers going to state

The Coal City Middle School 7th grade volleyball team, under the direction of coach Gina Horrie, will play in the first round of the Class 4A State Tournament on Friday.
The Lady Coalers defeated Charleston on Monday, 25-11, 25-15, to claim the Mahomet-Seymour sectional championship and advance to the final eight in the state. They will battle Chatham Glenwood (13-9) at 5:45 p.m. Friday at Normal Kingsley Junior High School in Normal.

Area middle school wrestlers will compete in state meet

Fourteen middle school wrestlers from the three area schools have qualified for the IESA Class A State tournament which will be held Friday and Saturday in DeKalb.
Coal City will be sending eight qualifiers after finishing second overall (194.5 points) to Tremont (196) in the East Peoria Central Sectional held Saturday.
The Coalers had six wrestlers finish in second place and will now take the mat during the finals on Friday in the Convocation Center on the Northern Illinois University campus in DeKalb.

Coal City to wrestle for championship!

Back-to-back victories for the Coal City wrestlers means they'll get their shot at defending the 2023 Class 1A state dual team title at 6 p.m. tonight (Saturday).

On Friday they upended Riverdale 54-13 in the quarterfinal round and this morning they took care of Vandalia 42-22 to advance to the championship match at Grossinger Auto Arena in Bloomington.
