Comets knock-off Beecher, fall to two ICE foes

The Reed-Custer boys basketball team was withing striking distance against Streator on Saturday but the Bulldogs pulled it out 62-55.
The Comets scored 16 points in the opening frame but Streator put up 21 to take a quick lead which led to a 33-28 half-time lead.
The Comets matched the Bulldogs in the third to keep the deficit at five 43-38.
But Streator came back to outscore the Comets and take the game.
Reed-Custer shot 36 percent from the floor, making three treys and 12-of-17 from the line.

Comets sending three to state

The road to state will only get tougher for the three Comet matmen who have qualified during Saturday’s sectional. They will be challenged in the first round on Thursday as the brackets are filled with several state ranked wrestlers.
The Comets had Ryan Tribble (138) and Kody Marschner (220) place third while Landon Markle (145) placed fourth.
They will also have two alternates joining them as Sam Begler (126) and Rex Pfeifer (170) will be along for the ride hoping to get into the tournament.

Gamboa places second in sectional, will compete in first ever girls wrestling state

Reed-Custer’s lone girls wrestler Judith Gamboa placed second in the Andrew High School girls wrestling sectional to advance to the first ever IHSA girls wrestling state tournament which will take place Friday and Saturday, Feb 25 & 26 at Grossinger Motors Center in Bloomington, IL.

Reed-Custer will be advancing three wrestlers to state starting Thursday as they wrestled well during Coal City Sectional.
They had Ryan Tribble (138) and Kody Marschner (220) place third while Landon Markle (145) placed fourth.
“I’m excited about it,” said R-C wrestling coach Yale Davis. “There were some very good matches at sectional and a lot of good competition. I think it was a tough sectional and we rose to the occasion in a lot of instances and everything didn’t go our way but some did. I felt good about all of the kids.”

Coal City Sectional houses 24 wrestlers ranked in top-10

The road to state just keeps getting tougher from here with 24 state ranked wrestlers expected to compete in the Coal City Sectional Friday and Saturday.
The Comets will have Sam Begler (126), Ryan Tribble (138), Landon Markle (145), Kody Marschner (220) and Gunnar Berg (285) competing at the sectional. There’s a chance they will all be challenged at their weight classes.

The Comets did well in the Seneca Regional on Saturday, placing third as a team with 122.5 points and ended up advancing five wrestlers to the Coal City Sectional on Friday and Saturday.
The Comets trailed Yorkville Christian (200) and Coal City (175) while Wilmington came in eighth with 17 points.
The Comets crowned Landon Markle (145) and Kody Marschner (220) while Ryan Tribble (138) and Gunnar Berg placed second. Sam Begler (126) earned third place.

Lady Comets puts finishing touch on Streator

The Reed-Custer girls basketball team started slow but were able to finish off Streator in a 42-33 senior night win on Monday.
Before the game, the Comets honored seniors Sylvia Crater, Emily Lochner, Adrionna Williams and Haley Buchanan for their contributions made to the basketball program over the last four years.
Both teams started slow as Streator led after one but Reed-Custer kicked it into high gear to tie the game at 15-15 going into the half.

Comets three points from state cheer finals

The Reed-Custer competitive cheerleading squad came in 14th during the preliminary round of the IHSA Competitive Cheerleading Small Division state finals.
Reed-Custer posted an 81.97 and were three points from making it to Saturday’s state finals. The last team advancing was Knoxville with 85.13 points.
Wilmington advanced to the finals where they placed fifth with an 86.13. Johnsburg won the first place trophy with a score of 94.87.

The Reed-Custer basketball team fell in a 62-54 loss to Lisle on Saturday.
The Comets came out firing as they led 27-21 at the half.
But Lisle took control in the second half, outscoring Reed-Custer 10-7 in the third to bring themselves within three and then they erupted with 31 in the final frame to close out the Comets, who scored another 20.
The Comets shot 40 percent from the floor with six threes and hit 8-of-15 from the line.

Masks optional for sports fans

Fans planning on attending sporting events at Reed-Custer, Coal City or Wilmington may still want to bring a face mask, but wearing it won’t be mandatory.
The change was made Monday after two years of requiring masked fans to help contain the spread of Covid.
Athletic directors from all three schools agree that masks are strongly encouraged and recommended.
