Updated: Stateville inmate who died of COVID-19 identified

Grundy County Coroner John W. Callahan announced this monring, Sunday, April 5, the death of a 66-year-old man from COVID-19.

The man, Ronald Rice, died at Morris Hospital where he was a patient. He was an inmate from Stateville Correctional Center in Crest Hill.

According to the Illinois Department of Corrections website, Rice was serving an 80 year sentance for murder and a 60 year sentance for sexual assult.

An outbreak of the virus in the prision was announced early in the week and due to the strain on AMITA Health St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet where sick prisioners were being taken, the state directed other hospitals in the area—Morris Hospital, Silver Cross Hosptial, Riverside Medical Center and St. Mary's Hosptial in Kankakee— to care for the inmates.
