Traffic crash claims life of retired police officer

The office of Grundy County Coroner John W. Callahan announced this morning [Friday, June 26] the death of 66-year-old William Klegman, of Coal City.

Known to most in the community as 'Jersey,' Klegman was a long-time law enforcement officer having retired from the Coal City Police Department as a sergeant.

According to a release issued by the coroner's office, Klegman was eastbound on Pine Bluff Road, east of Rt. 47, when he entered into the ditch. It appears he was traveling at a slow rate of speed and may have been suffering from a medical condition at the time of the accident. Klegman was transported to the Morris Hospital Emergency Room where he was pronounced deceased at 8:44 p.m. on Thursday, June 25.

The coroner's office is investigating the death.
