Police, fire, report one dead in Des Plaines River rescue

Update: 4-3-18 The victim was identified using tattoo comparison as Michael Hollins, 42, of Joliet. An autopsy was performed Tuesday, April 3, and the final cause and manner of death will be determined following receipt of police, autopsy and toxicological reports.

Area police and fire units were called to perform a water rescue in the Des Plaines River Monday morning, but the rescue quickly turned to a recovery effort.

The Channahon Fire Protection District and Police Department responded to the scene, near the industrial area in the 23000 block of Youngs Road, south of the Rock Run Rookery Preserve, between Channahon and Joliet, at 10:38 a.m. The first responders to arrive located one victim, deceased, in the water.

As of 3 p.m., information about the victim had not been released by the Will County coroner's office.

Law enforcement is processing the scene and the MABAS Division 15 Incident Management Team established a Unified Command Post, and was still on the scene this afternoon. The Illinois State Police is investigating.
