Full Closure of Jackson Street Bridge over Des Plaines River

CHICAGO - The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced that a full closure will take place on the Jackson Street bridge over the Des Plaines River, in Joliet, beginning, weather permitting, Monday, April 24. The closure is necessary for mechanical and electrical repairs to the bridge.

Beginning April 24, the structure that carries Jackson Street over the Des Plaines River will be fully closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic until Monday, May 1. A posted detour will direct westbound Jackson Street traffic to go north on Scott Street (Illinois 53), west on Ruby Street to cross the river and south on Broadway Street to return to Bridge Street (Jackson Street). Eastbound Bridge Street (Jackson Street) traffic should take the reverse route. Marine traffic will not be impacted.

Jackson Street bridge is the fifth of six moveable bridges in Joliet to be repaired. The project to repair all six bridges has been ongoing for the past two years. The overall improvements will result in reliable and safe operation of the bridge, signal gates and traffic signals.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.
