Elwood President cancels Northpoint hearing

Due to a lack of support from members of the Village Board of Trustees, Elwood Village President Doug Jenco announced today that a public hearing concerning the annexation agreement for the NorthPoint project has been canceled.
In 2016, the village was presented with a development opportunity for the Northpoint project, to be developed on the east side of Route 53. The village planning commission held a series of public hearings on the project, receiving hundreds of comments from area residents against the development. The commission recommendation, however, was to approve the annexation, zoning and a special use permit for the project.
Village staff and consultants then negotiated a draft annexation agreement which was scheduled for a public hearing on Monday, April 23.
“In anticipation of the public hearing, I have discussed this matter individually with many of the village trustees,” Jenco wrote in a press released issued this morning. “My discussions have led me to conclude that there is not sufficient support for approval of the annexation agreement, therefore, I have canceled the public hearing.
“It is my intention that the public hearing will not be rescheduled unless I am instructed to do so at a public meeting of the President and Board of Trustees where such a request is on the board agenda.”
