The walking path that extends from McArdle Road on the north to Hunters Run on the south has no place between to stop for a quick rest. But, that’s about to change.

Eagle Scout candidate Nathan Fisher, a member of Boy Scout Troop 466 and recent graduate of Coal City High School, requested and was granted permission by the village of Coal City to construct two or three rest stations along the path for people to utilize when walking on bicycling through.

Fisher’s plan to construct benches for travelers to utilize while on the path is the community service component of his work to earn the rank of Eagle Scout.

Only 4% of scouts achieve the rank, the highest attainable in the Boy Scouts of America.

In addition to a community service project, Eagle Scout candidates must earn 21 merit badges (13 specific to the rank), and demonstrate scout spirit and leadership within their troop.

The rest stations Fisher is constructing will be located on the north end of the trail between Division Street [Route 113] and McArdle Road.

The wood benches, according to Village Administrator Matt Fritz, will be constructed of treaded or sealed cedar to be approved by the village’s public works department.

Trash receptacles will also be placed near the benches. Those cans will be ones that were utilized on South Broadway and removed as part of the reconstruction project.

Fisher has indicated the turnaround for the project will be rather quick, as he is working against a couple of deadlines and wants to have the project wrapped up prior to departing for college this fall.
