Coalers sweep home opener, dominate four-team meet

UP AND OVER–Coal City freshman Spencer Vaira had a personal best 3.33m in the pole vault last week to capture first place.

The Coal City track and field teams made a statement in their first outdoor home meet of the season Wednesday, sweeping both the boys and girls titles in a four-team meet against Dwight, Wilmington and Reed-Custer.
The Coaler boys piled up 115 points to outdistance Dwight (64), Wilmington (57) and Reed-Custer (28), while the girls followed with a commanding 91-point effort ahead of Dwight (58), Reed-Custer (53) and Wilmington (34).
Coal City’s boys were dominant in the sprints and hurdles.
Senior standout Parker Jacovec led the charge, winning the 200 meters (23.07) and adding a second-place finish in the 110 hurdles (15.81). Freshman Jonah Micetich turned in one of the top performances of the day, winning the 300 hurdles in 42.61, while Charlie Pfeifer followed in second (43.32).
In the 100 meters, Ryland Clements placed third (11.62), with Alexander Duran fifth and Levi Marshall sixth. Duran also added a sixth-place finish in the 200.
Coal City’s relay teams were a major factor in the win. The 4x100 relay team of Clements, Alexander Collins, Duran and Logan Natyshok took first (45.01), while the 4x200 team of LeRiyahn Hunter, Duran, Aiden Scrogham and Spencer Vaira also won. The 4x400 squad of Nick Pfeiffer, Marshall, Frank Roehr and Charlie Pfeifer made it a clean sweep with another first-place finish.
In distance events, Colten Lynn captured the 1600 meters (5:07.54), while Brady Pfeiffer added points in both the 800 (third) and 1600 (fifth). Brady Pierson placed fourth in the 3200.
Field events added to the total as Collins won the triple jump (12.65m) and took third in the high jump. Vaira claimed the pole vault title (3.33m), with Micetich finishing second. In throws, Emmett Easton led with a second-place finish in the shot put, followed by Keaton Berta in third. Gabriel Hamilton placed third in discus, with Berta adding a fourth-place finish.
The Coal City girls matched that dominance with a well-rounded performance.
Freshman Marina Figge was a standout, winning the 200 meters (28.57) and placing third in the 100 (13.32). Senior Ella Wills added a strong day, taking fourth in the 100, winning the long jump (5.16m) and capturing the triple jump title (10.00m).
In hurdles, Madelyn Castle placed third in the 100 hurdles and second in the 300 hurdles, while contributing to the winning 4x400 relay.
Distance runners delivered key points as well. Savanna Freis finished second in the 800, Lana Larsen was fourth, and Kyla Stark placed second in the 3200, just ahead of teammate Izzy Anderson, who was third. Anderson also added a fourth-place finish in the 1600.
In field events, Evelyn Wills and Kinsley Nowak went 2-3 in the high jump, while Figge placed second in the long jump behind Wills. In discus, Jaylyn Hogan led Coal City with a fourth-place finish, and Hogan added points again in the shot put alongside Kayla Stalter, who finished fourth.
Relay teams helped seal the win. The 4x400 relay of Castle, Evelyn Wills, Hope Wermer and Carmella Ferrara took first, while the 4x800 team of Larsen, Anderson, Stark and Freis also claimed victory. The 4x100 and 4x200 relays each added runner-up finishes.
