Charles Staples

WILMINGTON—Charles H. Staples “Chuck,” 89, of Wilmington passed away Wednesday,  April 11, 2018 at his home.
Born Sept. 17, 1928 in Rock Falls, Illinois, Charles Henry was a son of Harry and Florence (DeMay) Staples. He was raised and educated in Sterling, and then enlisted in the United States Navy, serving on the U.S.S. Morrison during World War II. Following his service in the Navy, Chuck enlisted with the United States Army, and would retire after 21 years of service that included the Korean Conflict and the War in Vietnam.
After retirement from the Army, he worked for a television cable company and Mobil, until he retired in the mid 1990’s. In his spare time, Chuck enjoyed operating his HAM Radio under the call sign WB9KTU.
Survivors include his spouse: Irmgard (nee Loehner) Staples of Wilmington; two daughters: Sandra Staples of Braidwood and Diane (Kerry) Proffitt of Wilmington; six grandchildren: Josh (Danielle) Wilson, Danielle Wilson, Alyssa Howard (Fiance Ray Spires), Roxanne (Kaleb) Barnhart, Riki Staples and Apryl Proffitt; six great grandchildren, with another expected this month; and one brother-in-law and five sisters-in-law, all in Germany.
Chuck was preceded in death by his parents; one son: Richard Lee Staples, one daughter Carolyn in infancy, and his siblings: Fern, Ada, Etta Mae, Ralph, Glenn and Richard.
A private family burial with full military honors was held in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood.
