Broadway bound

Stage productions are more than actors on the stage, there are playwrights, sound designers, costumers, conductors, stage hands, carpenters, playbill writers and so many others working behind the scenes to tell a story.
Coal City High School's drama club has been exploring the various aspects of theater production with trips to regional theaters, where members take part in workshops with theater professionals.
Club members will take the ultimate theater excursion when they head to Broadway next spring. At its meting last week, the Unit 1 Board of Education approved the club's request for a four-day trip to New York City.
The educational trip will allow students to further explore careers in the theater arts through drama and interactive workshops with Broadway actors, theater and backstage tours and of course, taking in Broadway shows.  In between all that there will be a little bit of time to take in select parts of the city such as Times Square, the Empire State Building and Rockefeller Center and the adjacent NBC Studios.
The itinerary includes tours of Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall and the New Amsterdam Theater, home to “Aladdin,” and the offices of the Disney Theatrical Group.  
Drama club members Cody Rogers and Lauren Phillips joined club sponsor Jack Micetich in presenting the trip to the board for its consideration at the April 25 study session.
Set for March 26 to 29, 2019, the trip will be financed by students with no district costs incurred. Drama club is planning a series of fundraisers and events to offset the students’ travel costs. The first fundraiser was the club's Broadway Revue held May 4 and 5.
